Safe Shoveling Tips
Healthy bodies require healthy injury prevention. Winter often brings a
beautiful covering of nature. Until it needs to be removed. Keep in mind
you can be safe and limit injuries if you follow some safety tips.
Here are some suggestions:
- Allow enough time to shovel
- Use a well-made sturdy shovel
- Wear boots or work shoes with good traction
- Layer very warm winter clothing including a hat
- For large storms, plan to handle the projects in 'pieces' by
dividing the area in sections and rest in between areas.
Avoid shoveling if you have a history of heart disease, pregnant or are a senior
citizen.
Lift with your legs instead of you back. This takes pressure off your spine
and puts it on your leg muscles.
Tighten your abdominal muscles when you lift a heavy load of snow. Tightening
your stomach muscles will provide extra lower back support (add a back brace for
extra support).
